To Jim Ryan (Short takes 1/10) and all the other pensioners out there complaining about what they receive from the Government, the phrase "saving for a rainy day" has been around since the 16th century. If you chose not to save for a rainy day, then don't complain about what you've got now.

Max Steele, Adamstown

It is with dismay that I find the new bus timetable doesn't include the express bus service from Swansea and Caves Beach. The 351 service meant that we were able to sell our second car and invest in solar technology for our home. By using the bus and installing solar we are able to minimise our CO2 emissions. What Caves Beach and Swansea needs is an upgraded express service to Newcastle, not a cancellation.

Chris Scott, Caves Beach

As a prospective 50-year member of the NRMA, and receiving my proxy voting forms yesterday, I am wondering if our region's two board nominees, John Mills and Kyle Loades, would like to offer a public opinion. The opinion I would ask for is: would they consider offering 50-year members free membership, as it was in the past.

Ray Scott, Blacksmiths

Yes, Yvonne Emerton, I agree we should have another vote on daylight saving (Short takes 2/10). Daylight saving should run from March until September, not during the long, hot days of spring and summer.

Mick Lacey, Denman

Hunter Water boss Kevin Young thinks the proposed Tillegra Dam is a standout project. I agree, but in the following ways. It is a dam that many specialists say is not needed. It is too costly. Across the world dams are seen as archaic and many are being removed. It will be an environmental disaster for the Williams River and the people of Dungog.

Camilla Burgess, Carrington

In response to Jean Anderson (Short takes 30/9), EnergyAustralia provides home electrical services using one of the country's largest collections of licensed electricians. Customers are always welcome to obtain quotes and services from other electricians. We regret that Ms Anderson was dissatisfied because providing a high level of customer service is a priority.

About daylight saving: it's global, not just our country. If u have kids, ur up @ 5am. 6am sounds much better.

Angela Darcy, Newcastle

Daylight saving is the best part of the year. More daylight with the family.

Jay Paul, Gorokan

How any existing route could be scrapped from newcastle's struggling bus service as a result of the recent timetable review is completely beyond me. Every existing route should be retained, with more added, simple as that.
